Central home air conditioner service systems consist of two major components: a condensing unit that sits outside your house, and the evaporator coil (often referred to as an A-coil) that sits in the plenum of your furnace or air handler. The refrigerant in the A-coil picks up the heat from your home and moves it to the outdoor condensing unit. The condensing unit fan blows outside air through the condensing coil to remove the heat. The condensing unit houses the three parts replaceable by a DIYer: the contactor, the start/run capacitor(s) and the condenser fan motor. The condensing unit also houses the compressor, but only a pro can replace that. The A-coil has no parts that can be serviced by a DIYer.

Some of the most common problems that require gas furnace repair include malfunctioning thermostats, frequent cycling, blowers that continuously run, excessive noise, general lack of maintenance, dirty filters and electric ignition or pilot control problems. Repair Clinic can show you how to fix your furnace and save you money on the parts and repair. Safety first! Be sure to consult an HVAC pro if you’re not confident making furnace repairs.
Sometimes a heating and air conditioning system just needs to be repaired rather than completely replaced. You may need air conditioning repair services if there is leaking around the outside unit, the air coming into the house isn't hot or cool enough, the unit is short-cycling or constantly turning on and off, using the system is consistently resulting in higher-than-normal energy bills, or if there is excessive noise during startup and operation.

A furnace flame sensor is a device that's found in the burner assembly of your home's furnace. This thin metal rod sits directly facing the furnace's flame stream, and it tells the furnace whether ignition has occurred once the gas valve has been opened. If the gas valve has been opened and the sensor fails to detect a flame, the furnace will automatically shut down.

Ductwork pinging or popping. If you hear a pinging or popping sound coming from metal ductwork, this may be caused by thermal expansion or by air blowing past a loose flap of metal. Track along the duct runs, listening for the sound. If you find it, make a small dent in the sheet metal to provide a more rigid surface that’s less likely to move as it heats and cools.

The main purpose of your furnace filter is to ensure that none of the additional materials your fans pull back into the unit - such as hair and dust - actually damage the furnace or its parts. In the process, it also improves air quality in your home. Some annual inspections will include changing and cleaning this part of the unit. That said, you can also clean or change your furnace filteryourself. Costs for new filters range based on brand, but tend to be around $30.
While repair is often the preferred choice, problems like a consistent repeating complication or extra-costly furnace repair parts might start leading you in a different direction. Remember that repair is only the preferred option when the cost of seeking it makes sense! If you’re shelling out for repair every single year, then it might be time to talk to your heating contractor about furnace replacement.
When I came to Home Depot to put my order for reparing my furnance, the representive said diagnosis is free. But Blue Flame charge me $80. It is probably the transformer failure. The transformer was changed one year ago. The part Blue Flame installed is made in China and sell online $10/each. Blue Flame charges $385, including installation. That's over charged
Cleaning the debris that builds up on your filters will aid with the flow of air. When your air filter is clogged, your air handler must work harder to compensate for the blockage of air flow. In addition to driving up your utility bill, the reduced air flow through your heating and cooling system can cause your heat exchanger to overheat and shut off too quickly.
Reinstall the access panel and disconnect block. Turn on the circuit breaker and furnace switch. Then set the thermostat to a lower temperature and wait for the AC to start (see “Be Patient at Startup,” below). The compressor should run and the condenser fan should spin. If the compressor starts but the fan doesn’t, the fan motor is most likely shot. Shut off the power and remove the screws around the condenser cover. Lift the cover and remove the fan blade and motor (photo 7). Reinstall the blade and secure the cover. Then repower the unit and see if the fan starts. If it doesn’t, you’ve given it your best shot—it’s time to call a pro.

High-efficiency condensing furnaces (90% AFUE and above) are a bit more complex than conventional furnaces. The main differences between a conventional and condensing furnace are the heat exchanger technology used to extract heat from the combustion process and the method used to exhaust the combustion gases. In these ways, the furnaces are very different. The condensing furnace does not have a significantly more efficient combustion process than does a conventional furnace; both use gas burners with electronic ignition. The difference lies in that the condensing furnace has a more efficient heat extraction process after combustion.

When your furnace filter becomes dirty, dusty and clogged, you can expect some negative effects on your furnace efficiency and your indoor air quality. The forced air is supposed to get blown through the filter and the filter is supposed to trap any particles so they don’t end up in your air ducts and throughout the house. When the filter has trapped too many particles and it is clogged up, the air keeps blowing, but some of those trapped particles will end up in the system and your living space. Another effect is that the furnace has to work harder to get the same amount of air through that dirty filter, so your heating bills may go up.
"Very impressed. Returned call within 24 hours. They came out the same day I spoke with them and made the repair within 25 minutes. Very low service call fee. I had another repair service out two weeks earlier and after 3 service calls and the central air still not fixed and temperatures in the high 90's, it was such a relief to have a company identify the problem, have the necessary part with them and fix the problem."
Finally, don't underestimate the thermostat as a potential reason why your furnace is not working. Everything on the heating unit itself may function perfectly, but your home still will not heat right if the console you use to set the temperature doesn't communicate your input. A faulty thermostat can either be due to the wall unit itself, or the wiring that connects it to your furnace. Average thermostat repair costs are between $108 and $282, including labor. Replacement costs, of course, depend on the thermostat you choose. Visit our thermostat repair cost guide to learn more about this type of issue.
I have a 90% efficient forced air gas furnace and when it was installed 4 years ago the guy didn't hook up a fresh air intake pipe allowing the furnace to draw in air from the hallway(slab home). My question is there are two holes for intake and I need to know if I should use one for the intake and block off the other or does it require two pipes? There is already a 2 exhaust leading outside thru wall.
As touched on by their name, heat pumps function by transferring heat energy indoors during the winter and outdoors from your home during the summer. They're often attached to air conditioning units, using the surrounding air to transfer energy. However, geothermal heat pumps and water source heat pumps are also available. The cost to repair a heat pump, again, depends on the specific problem. Replacing a faulty thermostat may cost up to $300 including labor, while a worn or damaged defrost control board can set you back up to $600. For more details on your potential repair costs using this heating source, visit our heat pump repair cost guide.
Today’s heaters are technological wonders that will keep you warm and save you money. Replacing the unit before it dies altogether can save you time, trouble and money.

Put simply, any home that uses air pushed through ductwork for heating purposes takes advantage of forced air heating. In other words, this term refers not to your furnace, but to the delivery method of the heat throughout your home. Forced air heating is possible with electric or gas furnaces, or a heat pump. Any issues with this delivery system that aren't directly related to the furnace likely have to do with the duct work, which costs between $35 and $55 per linear square foot to repair, or the air handling unit.

Furnaces and thermostats are not mix-and-match appliances. Using the wrong type of thermostat with a furnace will cause operating problems and can be dangerous. Although thermostats look similar, they are designed very differently. There are numerous types of heating systems and thermostat systems and they need to be coordinated for safe and proper operation. There are three types of thermostat systems used today: millivoltage, low voltage, and line voltage.

Check your fuse box and make sure that your breaker is not flipped. If the breaker has been tripped, then no power will go to your system. Once you have switched it back on, check that there is power going to your thermostat, air handle, and outdoor HVAC unit. If you notice your breakers tripping regularly, then you may need to contact a qualified electrician.
